Driving to Strasbourg Christmas Market - Crit'Air & Parking Guide 2026
Updated 23 March 2026
Strasbourg’s Christmas market is one of Europe’s oldest and most popular, drawing millions of visitors each November and December. If you are driving from the UK, you will need a valid Crit’Air sticker to enter Strasbourg’s permanent ZFE zone. Apply by mid-October to guarantee delivery in time for the market season.

Strasbourg’s ZFE and the Christmas market
Strasbourg has operated a ZFE (low-emission zone) since 2021, covering the city centre and surrounding urban area. The zone includes every street and car park near the Christmas market sites.
As of 2026, the following vehicles are banned from Strasbourg’s ZFE:
- Crit’Air 5 and unclassified vehicles - banned at all times
- Crit’Air 4 vehicles - banned on weekdays
Crit’Air 1, 2, and 3 vehicles can enter freely. Crit’Air E (electric) vehicles have unrestricted access. Even if your vehicle is permitted, you still need the physical sticker displayed on your windscreen or your printed digital facsimile available.
Entering from Germany
Strasbourg sits directly on the German border, and many visitors cross from Kehl over the Rhine bridges. The ZFE applies regardless of which direction you enter from. German-registered and UK-registered vehicles all need a valid French Crit’Air sticker. A German Umweltplakette (green environmental sticker) is not valid in France.
When to apply for your sticker
The Strasbourg Christmas market typically runs from late November to 24 December. To make sure your sticker arrives in time:
- Apply by mid-October - this gives you a comfortable 6-8 week buffer
- Apply by early November at the latest - delivery takes 10-14 working days in normal conditions
- Leaving it later? - your digital facsimile PDF is valid immediately as a temporary substitute, so you are covered even if the physical sticker has not arrived
Autumn is not a peak application period, so delivery times are usually closer to the 10-14 day normal range. But postal delays can happen, so applying early removes the stress.
Best route from the UK
There are two main driving routes from the UK to Strasbourg.
Route 1: Eurotunnel via Calais and Reims (recommended)
- Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais (35 minutes)
- A26 south to Reims (2.5 hours)
- A4 east to Strasbourg (3 hours)
Total driving time from Calais: approximately 5-6 hours (520 km). Tolls on this route cost around €45-55 each way. This is the most direct route and the roads are excellent dual carriageway and motorway throughout.
Route 2: Via Brussels and Luxembourg
- Eurotunnel or ferry to Calais or Dunkirk
- A25/E42 east through Belgium via Brussels
- E25 south through Luxembourg
- A31/A35 into Strasbourg
This route is slightly longer but avoids most French tolls, as Belgian and Luxembourg motorways are free. Total driving time from Calais is approximately 6-7 hours (600 km).
Parking for the Christmas market
The Grande Ile - Strasbourg’s historic island centre where most Christmas market stalls are located - is largely pedestrianised during the market season. You cannot drive into the market area itself.
Park-and-ride (recommended)
Strasbourg operates several park-and-ride (P+R) facilities connected to the city centre by tram. These are the best option for Christmas market visitors:
- Elsau (Tram A) - large car park, direct tram to city centre in 10 minutes
- Rotonde (Tram A/D) - close to the city, fills up early on weekends
- Baggersee (Tram A) - south of the city, good availability
Parking at P+R sites is free when you purchase a tram ticket (€1.90 for a return trip covering up to 7 people in your group). The tram runs frequently and drops you within a short walk of the main market areas.
City centre car parks
If you prefer to park closer, there are multi-storey car parks at Austerlitz, Gutenberg, and Petite France. Expect to pay €15-25 for a full day and be prepared for long queues on weekends, especially in December. All of these are within the ZFE, so your Crit’Air sticker must be displayed.
What to expect at the market
The Strasbourg Christmas market (Christkindelsmaarik) has run since 1570 and spreads across multiple squares in the city centre. The main sites are:
- Place Broglie - the traditional market
- Place de la Cathedrale - surrounding the famous cathedral
- Place Kleber - home to the grand Christmas tree
- Petite France - charming half-timbered neighbourhood with smaller stalls
The market is open daily from late morning until late evening. Weekends are significantly busier than weekdays. If you can visit on a Monday to Thursday, you will have a much more pleasant experience.
Practical tips for UK drivers
- Carry your V5C logbook - French police can ask to see it at roadside checks
- Check your headlights - UK vehicles need beam deflectors or adjusted headlights for driving on the right
- Carry a warning triangle and hi-vis vest - mandatory equipment in France
- Budget for tolls - the Calais-Strasbourg route has several toll sections
- Winter tyres - not legally required in Strasbourg itself, but recommended in December and mandatory on some mountain routes in Alsace
Apply early and enjoy the trip
The Strasbourg Christmas market is well worth the drive. A Crit’Air sticker costs just £7 and is valid for the lifetime of your vehicle, covering every future trip to France. Apply in October, and by the time December arrives, the sticker will be on your windscreen and you can focus on enjoying the mulled wine and gingerbread.
