Crit'Air Sticker for Electric Cars - UK Driver's Guide 2026

Yes, electric cars still need a Crit’Air sticker to drive in French low-emission zones. You will receive the Crit’Air 0 (green and white) sticker, which is the best category available. It grants you unrestricted access to every ZFE zone in France, at all times, with no exceptions. But you must still have the sticker displayed - driving without one is a fineable offence even in a zero-emission vehicle.

Why electric cars still need a sticker

It seems counterintuitive. Your car produces zero emissions, so why would you need an emissions sticker? The answer is enforcement.

French authorities use the Crit’Air sticker as a visual and digital identifier. When ANPR cameras scan your number plate at a ZFE zone boundary, they check whether a sticker has been registered to that vehicle. If no sticker is registered, the system flags a violation - regardless of whether your car is electric.

Police conducting spot checks also rely on the visible sticker on your windscreen. Without one displayed, they have no quick way to verify your vehicle’s status and will issue a fine.

The fine for not having a sticker is €68 for cars, even if your vehicle would qualify for the highest category. It is an administrative requirement, not an emissions judgment.

Crit’Air 0 - what it means

Crit’Air 0 is the top tier of the French emissions classification system. It is represented by a green and white sticker and is reserved exclusively for zero-emission vehicles.

Vehicles that qualify for Crit’Air 0

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) - Tesla, Nissan Leaf, MG4, BMW iX, Peugeot e-208, etc.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) - Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo
  • Any other vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions

What Crit’Air 0 does NOT include

  • Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) - these get Crit’Air 1
  • Mild hybrids - these get Crit’Air 1 or 2 depending on age and fuel type
  • Range-extended EVs with a petrol generator - typically Crit’Air 1
  • LPG or CNG vehicles - these get Crit’Air 1 at best

The distinction is strict: if your vehicle has any form of internal combustion engine, even as a backup, it cannot be Crit’Air 0.

Benefits of Crit’Air 0 in French cities

Having the green Crit’Air 0 sticker is not just about avoiding fines - it comes with genuine practical advantages:

Unrestricted ZFE access

While other categories face various time-of-day or day-of-week restrictions, Crit’Air 0 vehicles can enter every ZFE zone in France at any time. This includes during high-pollution episodes when even Crit’Air 1 and 2 vehicles may be temporarily banned.

Parking benefits

Several French cities offer preferential parking for Crit’Air 0 vehicles:

  • Paris - reduced or free on-street parking in some arrondissements
  • Lyon - discounted rates at municipal car parks for Crit’Air 0
  • Strasbourg - free parking at park-and-ride facilities for EVs

Policies vary by city and change frequently, so check locally. But the trend is firmly toward rewarding zero-emission vehicles.

Future-proof status

As French cities progressively tighten their ZFE restrictions - banning Crit’Air 3, then Crit’Air 2 - Crit’Air 0 vehicles will always be in the clear. Your green sticker means you never need to worry about evolving rules.

Plug-in hybrids get Crit’Air 1

This is one of the most common points of confusion. If you drive a plug-in hybrid - a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, BMW 330e, Volvo XC60 Recharge, or similar - you will receive Crit’Air 1 (purple), not Crit’Air 0.

Crit’Air 1 is still an excellent category. As of 2026, no French ZFE zone restricts Crit’Air 1 vehicles. You can drive freely in Paris, Lyon, and every other city.

The practical difference between Crit’Air 0 and Crit’Air 1 is minimal today, but during severe pollution episodes, Crit’Air 1 could theoretically be restricted while Crit’Air 0 remains free to drive.

When applying for a Crit’Air sticker through the official French system, you need to provide vehicle details including emissions data. For electric vehicles, this can be confusing because many fields do not apply.

What to enter on the form

  • Fuel type: Electric (Électrique)
  • Euro emissions standard: Not applicable (N/A)
  • CO2 emissions: 0 g/km
  • First registration date: As shown on your V5C

Nissan Leaf

Both the original 24/30 kWh Leaf and the newer 40/62 kWh models qualify for Crit’Air 0.

BMW i3

The standard i3 is Crit’Air 0. However, the i3 Range Extender (REx) model, which has a small petrol engine, receives Crit’Air 1 instead. Check your V5C if you are unsure which version you have.

Hybrid models to watch

The following popular models are not Crit’Air 0 despite their green credentials:

  • Toyota Prius (non-plug-in) - Crit’Air 1 (Euro 5/6 petrol hybrid)
  • Honda Jazz Hybrid - Crit’Air 1
  • Kia Niro HEV (non-plug-in) - Crit’Air 1

These are all excellent results and face no restrictions in any current ZFE zone. But they are worth noting if you assumed “hybrid” means Crit’Air 0.

Charging in ZFE zones

One of the practical benefits of Crit’Air 0 is unrestricted access to charging infrastructure within ZFE zones. France has been rapidly expanding its public charging network, and many of the fastest chargers are located within city centres - inside ZFE boundaries.

With Crit’Air 0, you can:

  • Access city-centre rapid chargers at any time
  • Park at charging bays that may have Crit’Air restrictions during pollution events
  • Use overnight charging at hotels and campsites within ZFE zones without concern

France has over 130,000 public charge points as of early 2026, with strong coverage along autoroutes and in city centres. The major networks (Ionity, TotalEnergies, Fastned) all accept UK contactless payment cards.
